Think back to last year's relentless and brutal winter. Back-to-back blizzards brought pleas from emergency management authorities for people to stay off the roads, and schools and offices saw a record-number of closings and delays. With such treacherous conditions, employers found themselves hesitant to crack down on absent employees when they seemed to have a good reason to stay home.

Although much of the country has experienced a fairly mild winter compared with years past, the issue of inclement weather doesn’t go away. Winter rains and snows will soon give way to spring floods and even tornadoes. And in California, warmer weather may also mean wildfires.

Every season brings its own weather woes, leaving employers wondering how to handle tricky issues such as attendance policies, leave time, and when people must be paid in spite of attendance at work. This fast-paced 90-minute webinar will provide an overview of employee regulations when it comes to weather-related absenteeism, specifically as they apply to businesses in California.

Participate in this interactive and timely webinar, and you'll learn:

  • How California and federal wage & hour laws apply to weather-related absences
  • Key differences between exempts and nonexempts under state law when bad weather causes shortened workdays or facility closures
  • The ins and outs of tricky California "on call" rules when dealing with potential weather-related disruptions
  • Why you must have an inclement weather policy and points to include when developing one
  • How to effectively communicate policies to employees before inclement weather hits
  • How to accommodate employees who can’t make it in due to the weather
  • What to do with employees already at work when bad weather hits, and how to calculate their pay under California law if your office closes
  • How to calculate time-off, attendance, and deductions when workers are absent due to weather
  • Pros and cons of having workers work from home
  • What to do when an employee wants to make up time missed due to bad weather
  • What constitutes an “Act of God” for purposes of the state wage & hour laws -- and how to pay employees properly when one hits

In just 90 minutes, you'll learn how to balance the need for a reliable workforce with the necessity of flexibility when travel to work is hazardous. Register now for this timely event especially for California employers risk-free.
